Wang, Yanks Rebound vs. A’s

June 12, 2008

The Yankees edged the A’s 3-1 behind a sharp pitching performance by Chien-Ming Wang.  Wang earned his 7th win pitching 7.1 stellar innings allowing seven hits and one run while striking out two.  Wang’s sinker was effective, as he induced 15 groundball outs, including a key double play ball in the 7th inning ending a bases loaded threat with the Yankees up by only one run.  Jose Veras earned his third hold of the season pitching the last two outs of the eighth inning, continuing to prove to his teammates and manager he’s worthy of manning late inning duties.  Mariano Rivera put his Kansas City memories behind him earning his 17th save allowing one hit.  Offensively the Yankees did a majority of their damage in the first inning via Jason Giambi and Alex Rodriguez RBI singles.  Melky Cabrera added a vital insurance run in the 9th inning launching a solo home-run off Keith Foulke showing signs of life from his bat.  The Yankees pitchers shined and earned the victory for the team delivering when necessary in clutch situations.  It’s vital for the Yankees to improve their play on the road and this road trip offers an opportunity to do that.  Tonight, the Yankees most consistent pitcher, Darrell Rasner duels Justin Duchscherer.

Chein-Ming Wang earned his first win since May 2nd and dimished numerous threats presented by the A’s by inducing double play ground balls.
