Reds Hone in on Moose, Halt Win Streak

June 21, 2008

Edwin Volquez shined outdueling Mike Mussina as the Reds ended the Yankees win streak at seven winning 4-2.  Despite surrendering four runs in eight innings of work, Mike Mussina pitched excellent, but the Reds took advantage of his few mistakes.  Joey Votto crushed a solo home-run to the right field bleachers when Moose left a pitch over the plate, and Jolbert Cabrera ripped a two-run double after Joe Girardi prompted Moose to intentionally walk Jay Bruce.  Mussina was extremely economical and efficient, continuing to show signs he can be a big contributor to filling in Chien-Ming Wang’s void.  Billy Traber, who was recently called up, look much improved quickly shutting down the Reds in the 9th inning.  The offense has scored four runs the last two games, but faced one of the best pitchers the NL has to offer in Volquez.  The Yankees left four men on base and were caught stealing twice.  Defensively Mike Mussina’s three-run 5th inning was opened by a misplayed ball by Jonny Damon and Jose Molina didn’t convincingly tag out Cabrera at home plate.  The Yankees look start a new win streak today when Dan Giese gets the call to duel Daryl Thompson.

Mike Mussina pitched extremely economical working eight innings allowing the bullpen to rest.
