Multi-Stadium Double Dose Results in Split

June 28, 2008

The Yankees and Mets split Friday’s double header resulting in a 15-6 Yankees loss at Yankee Stadium and 9-0 Yankees win at Shea Stadium.  The Yankees pitching staff was lit up during the first portion of the double header, as Dan Giese surrendered six runs in only four innings of inefficient work.  Edwar Ramirez relived Giese for 1.2 innings yielding two runs and Ross Ohlendorf hit rock bottom serving up six runs in 1.1 innings pitched including a Carlos Delgado grand-slam obliterated deep to right center.  Carlos Delgado shined in the first game outscoring the Yankee offense pounding out nine RBI.  The Yankees would return the favor in nightcap shutting-out the Mets behind Sidney Ponson.  Ponson pitched six strong shut-out innings yielding five hits while striking out four.  Ponson was quite the surprise for the Yankees and hopefully he can provide the team with several more effective starts while the rotation is figured out.  Kyle Farnsworth returned to action in relieve and looked healthy throwing heat striking out two.  The pitching staff answered the early day melt-down in a major way slamming the door the Mets offense collectively.  The offense scored 15 runs through-out the day and Robinson Cano was the top performer driving in four runs and slammed a home-run to right center in the nightcap.  Bobby Abreu came alive in the second game going four-for-four with three RBI after going hitless in the first game.  The offense delivered with runners in scoring position during the nightcap after squandering a handful of key opportunities in the first game and must consistently hit in these situations to find a steady rhythm.  Today the Yankees turn to red-hot Andy Pettitte to duel ace Johan Santa at Shea Stadium.

Sydney Ponson injected life back into the Yankees during the nightcap pitching six superb innings and is now 5-1 with a 3.50 ERA.
